Plan ahead and think about your needs

Before you start moving furniture and painting walls, sit down and make a list of everything you need for an optimal workspace. Are you going to spend hours there, day in and day out? Do you only need a computer and keyboard? Do you need additional space for documents and stationery? Maybe you need glue and scissors? Write down your answers so you can focus on your needs and create a workspace that works for you.

Some are difficult, others less so, but one of the most fun has to be deciding on how the room of your family’s latest addition is going to look. Your baby is going to spend the majority of her day in the nursery, so it is important to create a pleasant, protective environment that evokes calmness and security. The room also has to be pleasant for you, the parents, because you too will find yourself spending countless hours there.

Plan before you buy

Before you start painting or rush to buy that crib you saw in the store, take some time to plan out the room and take into account an important factor in designing children’s rooms: it’s all very temporary. Before you know it, your little baby will become a kid and then a teenager, with all sorts of wants and needs, and you will find yourself replacing furniture and redesigning the room. A well-lit room is a pleasant, warm room. When planning a nursery, you should choose a well ventilated room with plenty of sunlight. Make decision together

It may be your house, but it’s their room. If your child is old enough, share the design process with them. Talk to your child, explain that you want to paint the room, talk about colors and general scheme, ask them about what they want or what their dream room looks like. In order to not overwhelm them, prepare several design ideas according to what you’ve talked about and let your child pick their favorite.

Themed room – yes or no?

One way to tie the room together is to pick out a main theme or inspiration from your child’s favorite things – soccer, enchanted forest, under the sea or anything else your child can relate to. Keep in mind that children tend to change their minds often, and designs that fit 3-4 year olds won’t necessarily get the OK from your first grader, and you might find yourself having to change up the design every year or two. If you’re going for a concept room, keep it general using stencils and geometric shapes instead of committing to specific characters.

Don’t be afraid of bold colors

Unlike adult bedrooms that for the most part enjoy a calm, subdued design scheme, children’s rooms need to be age-appropriate. You can certainly use bold colors on a dominant wall, as long as you tone it down with softer colors on the other walls. If you’re designing a nursey, you can go with bold colors to keep those little eyes moving and that imagination booming – but again, don’t paint the entire room in bold colors. You don’t want to overload your child’s senses. Instead, paint one wall or a few select areas in the room with a bold color, and keep the rest neutral. Wallpaper or wall stickers are another excellent idea for children’s rooms. You can match the color of the stickers or wallpaper with the rest of the colors in the room. A perfect color match between walls, furniture, accessories and even bedsheets can create a total-look.

When designing a room for a teenager, steer clear of gendered colors like blue or pink. Keep in mind your teenager’s needs – they like to feel grown up, they are adamant about their privacy, and they like having friends over. Keep the design relatively mature, with dashes of playfulness using wall stickers for example.

Unique walls for unique children

Make that room truly interesting and unique, you can choose to paint one wall with unconventional paint and add some aesthetic and creativity. Fill in cracks and holes, and make sure the wall is smooth and dry. If you’re painting adjacent walls in different colors, mask the border to keep your paint inside the lines. Paint the wall, wait a few hours until dry and add a second coat.

Your Complete Guide To Furniture Renovation

Furniture renovation has become quite a trend, and for a good reason. Redoing your furniture is more financially sound than buying a new piece, more ecological, and is a fun way to give a unique, personal touch to common furniture. We created a complete guide, to help you get a hold of do-it-yourself laminate and wood furniture renovation.

What you will need to redo your wooden furniture?

Before you start painting, you need to settle on your desired end result: painted wood can be opaque, covering the wood entirely, or clear, revealing its texture. Keep in mind that you cannot return opaque-painted furniture to their original condition.

For a natural wooden look, use water based wood varnish, clear or colored.
If opaque is what you’re after, paint your furniture using water-based Polior (comes in matte, silk, shiny or metallic) – an environmentally friendly paint, suitable even for nurseries and kids’ rooms, which comes in 1650 shades from the Tambour color fan.

In addition to wood paint, it’s important to use quality brushes that won’t leave bristles in the paint. It’s best to consult with a professional who can help you pick the right brush for the specific furniture you wish to paint, and ensure your end result is remarkable.

Prepping your furniture: patience is a virtue

Before you begin painting, remove all dust and dirt using a damp towel, and sand away peeling paint using fine-grain sanding paper. Use a coarser paper for opaque coats, in order to help the paint adhere to the furniture.
If there are minimal flaws or blemishes, fix them using Glue Putty 2000. When dry, sand until smooth, and wipe once more with a damp towel. This is a highly important step, and will ensure the paint will last for many years.
Mask over any areas that should remain unpainted, or will be painted with a different color. Use paper masking tape (you can reduce its adhesiveness by first sticking it on piece of fabric).
Place your furniture in a well-lit area, to reveal any flaws in either the wood paint coverage. Ideally, you should paint outdoors in the sunlight, but if not, opt for a well-lit room. Place your furniture on a tarp to catch all drips and messes, and get into your work clothes. Ready? Here we go!

Correct furniture painting for optimal results

Carefully read the instructions on your paint of choice. Each paint type comes with specific instructions, and correct use will ensure quality results.
A well-kept secret among professional furniture restorers: more layers, less paint. Don’t try to achieve full coverage right from the first coat. Apply a thin layer of paint and wait for it to fully dry before proceeding to a second coat, and repeat until reaching the desired effect. Doing this will prevent color discrepancies and guarantee a great looking piece of furniture. At least two coats are necessary for a good result.

Painting laminated wood

We all have at least one piece of laminated furniture. Very trendy in previous decades, laminate does suffer from wear and tear – but they can easily be turned to newly designed furniture. To paint laminated furniture, first sand the surface with a fine grain sanding paper, to provide better grip for the paint. Clean the surface of grease and dirt using soapy water or any other suitable household product. Cover in one coat of multipurpose, soluble primer and wait one hour until fully dry. Proceed to paint with two coats of water-based Polior in the shade of your choice.
